I am running SSMS ver 19.0.1. I just downloaded SQLSearch_3.6.1.3286.exe from link above. When I install, it appears to be trying to install 3.6. Error SQL Search 3.6 MSI returned failure code 1603: Fatal error during installation. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 2005,2008,2012,2014,2016,2017 or SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) 2008 required. Is there a new updated link?
UPDATE: I have resolved my issue. Had to uninstall SQL Search 3 (older version) using Revo Uninstaller due to fatal error when regular uninstall run. Then install ver 3.6.1.3286 successfully.

SSMS v19.0.2 automatically closes when SQL search button is clicked. I have the latest version installed. This does not happen in SSMS v18.12.1
• Hi @Ranjeetc

Please can you try uninstalling and reinstalling SQL Search first:

https://download.red-gate.com/checkforupdates/SQLSearch/SQLSearch_3.6.1.3286.exe

If this doesn't help, are there any recent events in the SSMS event viewer? Can you send over the SSMS logs?

Kind regards

We're working on this right now but in the meantime please can you downgrade to the previous version until we have a fix:
https://download.red-gate.com/checkforupdates/SQLSearch/SQLSearch_3.6.0.3167.exe

I'll let you know as soon as there's a release.

Hi @Victoria W hoping all is well, how does SQLSearch_3.6.1.3286.exe released on February 21, 2023 resolve the following long-standing issue (if at all)? Thank you

"Stop SQL Server from trying to login to all databases on the instance"
https://forum.red-gate.com/discussion/89373/stop-sql-server-from-trying-to-login-to-all-databases-on-the-instance

@Eddie D on Nov 7, 2022 (before the latest release):
"The Development Team responsible for SQL Search are in the process of adding a fix for this situation. I do not have an accurate ETA but the team plan to release this fix sometime next week."

However, no news since on this issue in several months since his Nov 7 post and no response after one week to my follow-up question in the thread.

Thank you!

I have downloaded this version and installed to SSMS 19.0.20209. The Search app toolbar does not appear and is not available to add when trying to customise the menu. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times.

@Victoria W I have just downloaded the latest version from your site, 3.6.3.3612. In SSMS 19.1 there is still an issue with SSMS shutting down when clicking the SQL Search-button.

Also, when I tried to install the above version, I got a message sayiing that there was already a newer version installed on the system. I had to uninstall and then install this version in order to be able to see the SQL Search button in SSMS 19.1 at all.

What version should I install in order for SQL Search to work in both SSMS 18 and 19.1?
• Hi @gerthauan

Please can you uninstall SQL Search using this Microsoft uninstaller tool:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/86975-program-install-uninstall-troubleshooter-windows.html

This tool is good for removing rogue registry keys that can cause installation problems.

Then do a fresh install. The latest version of SQL Search will work with SSMS 18 and 19:

We have had reports of this issue but have been unable to reproduce it as yet.

It would be useful to have a copy of your event log if possible? I will reach out in a support ticket so that you don't have to share this information on the forum.

@Victoria W - I've been also getting the same issues. Did a clean install of SQL Search but clicking on the SQL Search button just shuts down my SSMS. Started happening when I installed the latest SSMS version (19.1).

Any update on this? I have 19.1 fresh install of SQL Search and it crashes SSMS every time I try and open SQL Search.
• mickysoxmickysox Posts: 2 New member
Hi, if you are having problems, it's looks like the download link is pointing to 3.6.1. If you go to https://download.red-gate.com/checkforupdates/SQLSearch and download 3.6.3.x install that, it works great with 19.1.

@redgate please update the link on the main site.
• Hi @mickysox

That's been done, sorry for the inconvenience!

SQL Search and SQL Prompt had disappeared from SSMS 2018 and 2019.1 for me recently.
Multiple SQL Search and SSMS Integration uninstall and reinstall attempts did not fix it.

After reinstalling SSMS 2019.1 it poppped up an error. I must have clicked "do not show again" that mentioned C:\Users\MYUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AppEnv\15.0\ActivityLog.xml
Inside of that at the bottom I found a SQL Search error: CreateInstance failed for package [SqlSearchSsmsPackage]Source: 'mscorlib' Description: String cannot have zero length.

Searching for that let me to another post which resolved the issue.
https://forum.red-gate.com/discussion/87025/sqlsearchssmspackage-not-loading-correctly

I had to delete SQL Search files that were not being removed during uninstall and reboots and reinstalls.
So after uninstalling SQL Search, and then delete some left over files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Search\, and reinstalling, That fixed the issue for me.

Here's the entire error message I found in case it helps redgate resolve this issue for future users:

• Hi all

A bit late to the party here but I've just installed SSMS V19.1 and I can't get SQL Search to appear in the GUI.

When I try to install either of the versions from the links above, I get the message saying I have a newer version installed.

I've been into Control Panel to try and uninstall it but it won't disappear.

I'm just installing SSMS V19.2 so I'll let you know how that goes but is this another bug in the software?

Regards

Richard
• Hi all

Installed SSMS V19.2 and SQL Search not available. I've tried to uninstall SQL Search from control panel but it won't go. I've deleted everything I can find to do with it (in Program Files, Program Files (x86), AppData) but still no joy.

I can't install either of the versions mentioned here as the setup file is saying I've got a new version installed.

Anyone any ideas?

Regards

Richard
• Hi @RichardMGreen

Have you tried uninstalling SQL Search using this Microsoft uninstaller tool:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/86975-program-install-uninstall-troubleshooter-windows.html

Then reinstalling?
Kind regards

Just tried that but it said it couldn't fix the issues. I went through all the details and they all said "Issue not present" so I'm at a complete loss now.
