Split backup - one thread for each file?

Right now I'm using THREADCOUNT = 2 to speed up my backup and restore. If I split the backup into two files instead of using THREADCOUNT (these options are mutually exclusive), will it automatically use one thread for each file? I want the performance boost of multiple threads and by putting each file on a different raid array.
