Why does the synchronization wizard open up a second instance of SSMS when one is already open. I would much rather it use the currently open instance. Thanks!

  • Yes, this is indeed annoying behavior, and I'm guessing you get the same if you opened a .sql file in the windows explorer?

We have a tool that fixes this issue by tweaking the relevant registry entries.

    http://downloads.red-gate.com/EAP/Integ ... anager.zip

    • It supports SSMS up to 2008 R2.
    • You must run it as administrator (it’ll make changes in the registry)
    • Usage: run from command line. The installed SSMS versions will be listed. Select the relevant one you want to use as a default editor for SQL files by entering its number, then hit Enter.
    • Disclaimer:this tool is provided 'as is' and to be used at your own risk. We use it internally at Red Gate, but would like to stress that it isn't commercially tested software.
