Backup speed drops over time

We have huge database. We backup it over the 1Gb network to backup server for a week. First day backup was running really fast then it slowed down, and slowed down, and slowed down.

We have a lot of other activities going on the network and on the server.

Looks like even if we have underutilised resources, Network -10%, Disk io - 5 % and so on, the speed is never going up.

Looks like backup threads are dying over the time. I see we have only 2 left.

What is going on? How can we increase the backup speed?

Have you tried copying a file from the server to the backup server at about the same times, to compare the copying speed against the SQL Backup backup?

    Thanks.
