Off-Host Backups

I have not installed or tested the software myself yet due to lack of time, but a couple dba's in our company are telling me that when doing the backups, the backups are created locally on the SQL server first and then shipped off host to the remote destination. I am sure there is an option to avoid doing this, since if space on the SQL servers are limited it would make the product useless in such cases.

I could see this being the case if you chose to do the compression local instead of the on the fly (as sending) option but not otherwise.

Can someone please confirm or verify whether this is in fact true or not.

Thanks

  • Hi,

You can backup directly over a network to a remote machine without writing to the local disk first but we generally advise against this as it will mean the backup takes longer. Just specify the UNC path in the GUI or the TSQL command.

You may also want to look at the network resilliance options available in SQL Backup 6 to avoid any minor network outages causing your backup to fail.
