Failed Virtual Allocate Bytes: FAIL_VIRTUAL_RESERVE

mrclodmrclod Posts: 60
edited October 6, 2009 4:51AM in SQL Backup Previous Versions
The backup worked locally, but appears to have failed to move the copy. I have 2TB of free space and the backup is about 40GB compressed. Backup Pro 5.4 running on a cluster.

Have included information from the sql server logs below.

Clues???

Looks like our IT department didn't specify a max memory, setting SQL Server to have a max of 29G of the 32G on the system.

Not sure if that will do it, but not finding a lot of definitive information on the subject.
  • Options
I've tried reducing threads. Still get these errors. A second attempt (as specified for the backup job to do) is successful. Just doing a LOG backup at this point.

Threads are down to 2 and MAXTRANSFERSIZE is 1024.

Going to attempt to move the MAXTRANSFERSIZE down just a notch to see what happens. Not sure why a chunk of memory cannot be found in 3GB of free memory.

Does 6.2 address any of these issues??

Set Threads to 3, MAXTRANSFERSIZE to 960 on the LOG backup only.

A reply from RedGate would be nice so I could stop taking stabs in the dark at this.

Could you please post the contents of the SQL Backup log file for that backup? By default, the log files are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Red Gate\SQL Backup\Log\<instance name>.

    Thanks.

This is an intermittent issue. Some days no error(s), others 5-8 identical. Most of the time the retry works and gets a copy moved for us, other times, the copy does not happen. This server is the one that is most problematic. I do see this occasionally on other servers.

    Thanks for posting the log.

The log doesn't indicate any issue with the copying process. There is an issue with the amount of free memory, where the 1st backup attempt failed, while the 2nd succeeded because SQL Backup lowered its memory requirements.

The log shows that the largest contiguous block of free memory is 4194304 bytes in size. You actually have 48259072 bytes of total free memory, but they are spread over 299 blocks, which means a very fragmented address space.

If you want to, you can monitor this memory allocation by running the sqbmemory extended stored procedure e.g.
    EXEC master..sqbmemory

Monitored over time, you may discover what exactly is fragmenting the free memory space.

Would the value of MemToLeave affect this by chance since redgate routines appear to be external stored procedures?

Increasing the MemToLeave value using the -g switch is an option, but may not address the issue entirely.

During a SQL Backup backup, SQL Server requires large blocks of memory from the MemToLeave region to service the backup request. Your MemToLeave region has enough memory in total (~46 MB), but because they are fragmented, the average size is only 157 Kb. Some other component appears to be fragmenting this memory space. Could be some CLR routines, extended stored procedures etc, in which case increasing the MemToLeave region would just delay the fragmentation effect. I don't know if its possible to monitor what exactly is using the MemToLeave memory space.
