Redgate SQL Toolbelt significantly slows down start up of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

Hi there,

I have been asked by my employer to install Redgate SQL Toolbelt, specifically the tools called SQL Prompt, and also SQL Source Control, and have been able to download the installer since the licence was applied to a Redgate account I set up. (Not the same account I am using to post this message).

I have installed these two tools with SQL Server Management Studio 20 running on Windows 11 Pro, with a local instance of SQL Server with a developer licence, and am developing an ASP.net web-forms application with Visual Studio 2022 professional, on a high end HP business laptop.

Immediately after installing, and on removing and on re-installing the result is the same. Initially I had installed all the tools in the tool-belt, but then tried just these two specific tools.

SQL Server Management Studio takes over a minute to finish loading (in some cases, having installed all the tools, it never finished loading before I gave up and terminated the process). While loading the mouse cursor has the particular shape that indicates the process in Windows is busy.

And by the way, the Redgate Toolbelt installer is also somewhat unresponsive, sometimes it takes quite a few seconds just to tick a check-box to choose an item in the tool-belt from the list.

Without Redgate SQL Toolbelt installed SSMS has finished loading almost immediately after the software is run.

Is this normal, what could be happening?

Every other program on the laptop runs without any delay, from Visual Studio to Teams, to Office, etc.

Actually I prefer to use Azure Data Studio, and was only going to use SSMS because it interfaces with these two tools which were recommended by my employer.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Lee
