SQL Server Management Studio 19 Crashes after clicking SQL Search

I'm running SSMS 19.1 and RedGate Search 3.6.16.4399.  Search seems to work but when I click on "Select object in Object Explorer" it crashes SSMS.  Any solution?  I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling RedGate Search -- same results.  Thanks.

Addition: SSMS still crashes if I just open RedGate Search and don't click on "Select object in Object Explorer" -- I just have to expand one of the items in ObjectExplorer and SSMS crashes.  If I don't open Search at all, I can work without crashing.
  • Hi there,

    Thank you for reaching out.

For now, I've only been able to test with SSMS 19.3 and SQL Search 3.6.16 and I didn't get the same result. Are you able to upgrade to SSMS 19.3? If not, do you have any other Redgate extensions installed in SSMS?

    Hi,
I'm using SSMS v. 18.6 with this version of SQL Search: 3.6.16.4399 and I have the same problem.
I also have SQL Prompt version 10.14.14.8187 installed.

I will try to install SSMS v. 19.3 to see if that helps.

    Hello RedGate team!

I'm having the same issue and its so bad that I cannot browse anything in Object Explorer, SSMS crashes right away. I did try downgrading and nothing has worked. The problem started when I upgraded my local SSMS client from [19.1]  to  [20.2]. I then reinstalled 19.1 again and the issue is still there!! So now I have 2 versions of SSMS and neither has a stable Object Explorer. The only workaround is RDP-ing to a server that has 19.1 and no Redgate tools - and that works. So it looks like its most definitely pointing to something with RedGate tools. We all love RedGate tools and are not looking to get rid of RedGate....but this issue is starting to really hinder our work.

I did uninstall RedGate completely on my machine to see if it fixes the issue and did. As soon as I installed all the RG tools back (we have the complete suite - Redgate Toolbelt Essentials) - the issue came back again

    Need your help please!!!
  • Hi @Zev_Zelkin

Can you specify what version of SQL Search you have installed? Please list the full version number.

If you have any other Redgate products installed in SSMS, please list them as well.

    Hi Chris,
SQL Prompt is 10.14.21.9884, SQL Search is 3.6.19.4611. I downloaded all the latest versions of all the tools from RedGate website as of about a month ago.

Is there any update on our issue?

We have purchased the whole suite of RedGate products and are no longer able to use any of them as its crashing our Sql Server Management Studio. My response to your question was a week ago and I still haven't received any updates.

Can this be elevated to next level support please? We need this resolved ASAP
