Impact of VERIFY on Backups

We have the Backup Option "CHECKSUM" selected, but not "VERIFY"... would "best practices" be to have this option set?
If yes, what is the "hit" in terms of processing speed? A lot of our databases are either hundreds of GBs and a few are TB in size.

In regards to the "hit" on performance, this is hard to say, as it comes down to CPU, available RAM and HDD/network speeds. As Grant (from the article) says about the verify, "That can be a costly operation if the backup file is very large, so I don’t know that I’d run this check from my production system if I could help it.".
