Smart Rename does not work

MarioMario Posts: 10 Bronze 1
Hi,

the 'Smart Rename' feature no longer works. I use SQL Server Management Studio version V18.12 and SQL Promt version 10.12.1.28146. When clicking the Smart Rename function, the "Notify Red Gate of this Error" window appears. I have already sent this error message to Red Gate. Can you help me there? We really appreciate the Smart Rename feature.
Kind regards,

Mario

  • Hello @Mario

SQL Prompt version 10.12.2.28458 released today that should address your issue.
Please could you try it and let us know if that solves your issue?

    Hi RedGate Team,

After SQL Prompt version 10.12.2.28458 solved the issue, it seems that SQL Prompt version 10.12.6.30951 is causing the problem again. Unfortunately Smart Renam doesn't work again.

    Can you please help?

    Kind Regards,

    Mario

  • Hi @Mario

I'm sorry the issue with Smart Rename appears to have resurfaced!

I too am seeing the same issue in the latest version of SQL Prompt. I am going to escalate this to our development team again and will come back to you again as soon as possible.
    Kind regards

  • Hi All

This issue with Smart rename is caused by an issue with SQL Source Control, so if this was uninstalled it should function correctly. The teams are looking into a resolution to this currently.

    Hi Redgate Team,

Is there a timeline when the feature will be available again?

    Kind regards,

    Mario
  • Hi Mario, I don't have a timeline at this moment, but the team are still looking into it.

Hello, I have version SSMS v18.12.1, SQL Prompt v10.14.17.8739, SQL Source Control v7.7.9.18623 I have full Admin Rights on my Server / database and I'm getting the same error. Ran DBCC CHECKDB and there were no errors, I tried multiple databases on different servers and received the same errors. DBA's also checked the DB and permissions and all is good.

The error message does show the script that can't run and I am able to copy the script and run manually however as a work around.

An unexpected error was encountered while querying the database system tables (for Field). You may have insufficient permissions, or the database may be in an inconsistent state.  You are recommended to use SQL Compare with dbo permissions.  You can check the database is in a consistent state by running DBCC CHECKDB.
Original error message: Specified cast is not valid.

Same here, I tried everything known to man...Smart Rename DOES NOT work!!!

  • I'm experiencing the same error message that @Ramses000 is showing. This worked two years ago when we last had need but it no longer works now. The sentence about insufficient permissions or the database being in an inconsistent state are not valid in my case as I've checked both of those things. I've also run the SQL statement that is shown in the error message without issue.

Just adding to the collection of posts indicating that smart rename is not working and I am also experiencing the same error message that Ramses000 posts.
