I can't reinstall v3.3

Recently I installed SSMS 18.1. It didn't appear in the tool bar so I tried to reinstall it. Not surprisingly I got a message saying it was already installed. I used Programs and Features to remove it and it disappeared from my tool bar in SSMS 17.9.1 but still I got the message it's installed when trying to reinstall.

I checked out the help for it and noticed it said install SSMS before Search. If I hadn't done that, to remove some framework (sorry, can't remember exactly what it was called) and then install Search. I've been through my installed programs and I can find no such framework.

I'm using Windows Server 2016. Weird, I know, for a virtual desktop development machine but that's my company's policy.

Just to be sure it's not something off with your installer, can you try downloading a fresh one below and run it as an admin to see if that helps?

That tells me it's v3.2 and there's a later version already installed.

Where did you obtain the 3.3 installer from? As this version was released in error and shouldn't be being used. 

The correct latest version is 3.2.7. 

What we need to do here is to remove 3.3 and then load the version Sean has linked to.

First could you please try checking for this leftover reg key (which might not exist):

1. Open your registry (regedit) and locate this key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SQL Search 3

2. Right-click on the key, choose to export it and save the exported key to an accessible location

3. Right-click on the key again and delete it

4. Try running the installer again to see if it still thinks the tool is installed

If that doesn't work - try reinstalling 3.3 (ftp://support.red-gate.com/patches/SQLSearch/10Apr2019/SQLSearch_3.3.0.2332.exe) from the MSI(https://documentation.red-gate.com/xx/installing/installing-from-the-msi-file) which will hopefully get it listed again in Control Panel. 

If you could then try to use either the Microsoft uninstall tool https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/17588/windows-fix-problems-that-block-programs-being-installed-or-removed or the Revo uninstaller from https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html.

If that works to properly remove search then use the link to install 3.2.7.

I'm not entirely sure where I got the 3.3 installer but I think it came with Visual Studio 2017 when I installed it. Among the packages or individual components I'm pretty sure Redgate SQL Search was one of them.

I couldn't find that key in the registry.

I then tried to install 3.3 but it told me it was already installed.

I then ran the Revo uninstaller and it couldn't find SQL Search.

I ran the Microsoft one and that did find it but when I selected to uninstall, one step repairing the registry worked but the other step to uninstall SQL Search didn't.

I then tried to install 3.2.7 and that told me a later version was already installed.

to obtain the msi file and then follow the instructions from

To obtain uninstall logs could you please provide these? If needed you can email support@red-gate.com and we look into this further.

I didn't really follow what I was supposed to do with those 2 parts. I obtained the msi file as directed. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to follow the rest of the instructions from there and try and install so I tried and it failed with the same error about the product already being installed. I then tried to follow the SAP instructions to get an uninstall log but couldn't find a key for the RedGate tool (assuming that I'm not looking for SAP which would be weird as it's not installed) in either the 64 bit branch (because I'm using Windows Server 2016 as my OS) nor the 32 bit branch (because the tools is 32 bit). Should I just email that support address now?

Ignore that. I tried to edit the message to remove it but Edit didn't work. I changed the text, added the file attachment and clicked Post Comment. After a long pause, it finished and the comment was not updated. Tried again, same result except this time Post Comment didn't do anything.

So here's the file. I found the key eventually by a branch by branch search. I was looking for Redgate but the product description had Red Gate.
