SQL Source Control very slooooowwwww

We have a shared build server that we've been using for a few years now.  About 6 months ago, it started to get very slow when trying to commit changes to source control.  We are using GIT for Windows/Tortoise Git for version control locally, connected to a Visual Studio online repository.  The refresh/commit process can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes.  

Is there a log or something we can check to figure out what's going on?

You can find information on the logfiles here: https://documentation.red-gate.com/display/SOC6/Logging+and+log+files, whilst troubleshooting its worth setting the logging level to ALL (remember to set it back to its previous value once finished as it logs a lot of information).

Do you have a large amount of objects, encrypted or otherwise?

What sort of latency do you have to the repo?
