Fundamental performance difference between SVN and Git

We used to manage Source Control via SVN repository and were happy with they performance wise.
But since moving to Git to manage the repository side o things we have the performance has been hugely impacted.
We would hate to have to migrate back to SVN, but don't see any obvious reason managing the same databases in Git would have any negative performance issues compared to SVN.
As far as we can tell, the only difference is between picking Git over SVN.
