SQL Backup fails with VDI error 1010

Hi, after we applied windows updates at night all our backup jobs failed. Taking Red gate off line through cluster admina and then put back on line , restart didn't help. here is the error:
12/19/2008 10:20:35 AM: VDI error 1010: Failed to get configuration from server. Check that the SQL Server instance is running, and that you have the SQL Server Systems Administrator server role. Error code: (-2139684861: The api was waiting and the timeout interval had elapsed.)
12/19/2008 10:20:35 AM: SQL error 3013: BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally
