Theoretically the connection type doesn't matter: you can even go over the Internet if you can connect using SQL on port 1433.
The only things I can think may go wrong is if you try to pick your backup from the backup history, which is irrelevant because Log Rescue isn't going to transfer the backup file to the local server for you, and the possibility of timing out is much greater.
Other than that, if you're having a problem using Log Rescue it's probably not because of the type of connection.
