Where does compress happen?

Hi,
If my destination folder is a network share does SQL BKP 4.6 compress onto the local server 1st before it is sent across to the remote share?
I have a 65Gig DB that is backed up to a remote site via a 25MB radio link, compression speed is about 2.88MB/s.
Doing the the backup locally I get a compression speed of about 39.3MB/s.
Thanks
Russ

Is your link speed 25 megabytes/sec, or 25 megabits/sec? If the latter, then the throughput of 2.88 MB/sec is about right.
If you were to perform a native backup to the remote share via that link, what is the throughput achieved?
