Hyperbac 5.4.1.5 causing drive lockups then BSOD STOP 0b

Has anyone seen either of these symptoms before?

We're running Hyperbac 5.4.1.5 (note that 5.9.0.13 caused critical slowness issues when we tried it) on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, running SQL Server backups via Hyperbac to an EMC CX4-480 LUN.

Four times now across two different machines, we've seen the LUN we're writing backups to "freeze up" not allowing any access at all, to the drive letter on the local machine or to the drive as accessed as a Windows share; the SQL Server backup simply stalled out.

The first three times, simply stopping and starting the Hyperbac service fixed the symptom.

Today, using Restart to restart the Hyperbac service caused a blue screen of death on the server.
