Changing RedGate_SQLSourceControl_Engine_EngineOptions.xml?

As a result of timeouts and "unknown" user changes in a shared DB Source Control environment, we are trying to edit the RedGate_SQLSourceControl_Engine_EngineOptions.xml to set the polling times and to use a dedicated CHANGELOG database rather than TempDB.
After doing the changes and saving the edited XML file, a restart of SSMS overwrites this file back to the original XML. You can see in the file updated datetime in windows change as SSMS is opened again.
Can anyone advise how to persist the changes to this file on a user machine?
Many thanks in advance
