Setting number of Threads

How do you set the number of threads to use? I have read the performance document and it mentions adding more threads to increase performance. I am evaluating the product at the moment and comparing backup speed with SQL LiteSpeed - this product allows you to specify the number of threads to use. We are testing the software on a quad xeon machine and the backup times are more than double that of the same backup performed with SQL LiteSpeed. Any help would be most appreciated.

The number of threads correspond to the number of backup files created. E.g. Creating a backup to 4 files would cause SQL Backup to use 4 threads to perform the backup.
