Restore SQL 2000 database on a SQL 2008 server

I am trying to restore a backup created on SQL 2000 to a SQL 2008 server.

We use a backupscript that creates 4 files (4 threads on the server). When I try to restore the files I can add them to the restore dialog but SQL backup does not recognize the files as backup files.

Is this a known limitation or do I do something wrong?

We want the database in SQL 2008 to stay in SQL 2000 mode.

In the future we also will have setup where a database running on SQL 2008 (in SQL 2000 mode) will have to be restored on a SQL 2000 server will that be possible?

I hope somebody can help me with this.

  • Even though you want to be in SQL2000 mode on SQL2008 you cannot, with ease, restore it to SQL2000. The structure has changed and that happens when you restore into ot attach to a newer version server.

You don't mention how you created the SQL2000 backup that cannot be restored to SQL2008.
