Can the recovery tool be used from the desktop to recover objects on a server remotely, or does it have to be installed on every server?

    Yes.
    Once you have selected the objects you want to recover, you can then connect to a remote SQL Server and run the script to recover the objects through the tool. No need to install on the remote server.
