I have a Development server that we recently upgrade to SQL 2008. I have a database on that server that is still set to compatability level "SQL Server 2005 (90)". Is is possible to backup that database and then restore it to a server that is still SQL 2005?

  • Hi Daniel,

As far as I am aware, the compatibility mode doesn't affect the the mdf and ldf files of the database, they are still read as being whatever version of SQL Server you are running. With that in mind, you will not be able to restore a backup taken of a database on SQL Server 2008 running compatibility mode of 2005 on a 2005 server; you will need a 2008 server to restore it onto.

  • Thanks for the update. I assume that was going to be the case I just wanted to check.
