  Are you referring to the directory browsers? They are drawn using the results from xp_dirtree e.g.
  
  EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_dirtree N'C:\', 1, 1
  
  Can you run the query in Query Analyzer and compare if the results are sorted there?

  When I look at the extended store proc in master, the path listed is xpstar.dll.

  If you run SQL Server Enterprise Manager, and choose to restore a database using the 'From device' option, are the entries sorted in the Backup Device Location dialog?
