I shows that there is new upgrade ('new free maintenence releases available '). When I clink View detail it crashed.

    Hi Radovan,

I'm sorry that the new update service is giving you a bit of a hard time. Are there any errors left behind in the Event Log as a result of this crash? Please let us know so we can try to sort out any problems.
  • Hi There is nothing in Event log.

Only message I can get is message from Detail error botton:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

    ************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
    </configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

SQL Compare is probably trying to launch RedGate.Update.UpdateCheck.exe. Is this file not in the Red Gate SQL Bundle folder?
  • Yes,
This file is in the directory.

    Version: 1.0.0.12.

    Hi Radovan,

This must have to do with Update Service attempting to launch a web browser using a Process.Start() command. This is roughly the same as doing a Start->Run from the start bar and typing the URL.

Can you please try opening Run from the start bar and type http://www.red-gate.com?

If this also returns an error, you probably need to go into Windows Explorer and edit the file types so that URLs open with one of your installed browsers.

Please let me know if you need any more help.
  • Hi,
when I open run and type http://www.red-gate.exe
Windows explorer openes and goes to your start page.

    Hi Radovan,

Which web browser do you have set as the default browser in Windows? Is it Internet Explorer, or a different browser?
  • Hi,
    I only use IE.
I don't have any browser instaled on my comp.
  • Hi,
I just think one more thing.
In my company, I have firewall. Maybe, it uses samo udp port for upgrading.

I can't imagine this would be the case. It's just doing basically the same thing as Start->Run http://www.red-gate.com...
  • Can I download trial version, uninstall my version of SQl compare and register it again?
Maybe, than I can make update?

    Hi Radovan,

Sure thing. The trial software is identical to the release version.

Further to the process start problem, I think that if the shell registry key has an incorrect or missing value, the web browser may not start. Can you try running this command, and see what the output is?
    REG QUERY HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command
  • Hi,
I can't start reg, becouse My win 2000 doesn't recognise command.
But, with regedit I can read registry.
    In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command there is
    Value name: (default)
    Value data: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
  • Hi,
I just download new trial version and install (without uninstall old version) and now everything works fine.
  • I had the exact same thing happen to me. I downloaded the trial version again and am working fine now. I guess we will have to see what happens with the next version.

    John.
  • This continues to happen to me (last three pt releases) and it takes some searching to rediscover the workaround.

Is this going to get fixed?

If not, please consider adding workaround information to the update checker.

    Thanks,
    -- MikeR

PS. The good news is that this last release (3.41) seems to have fixed all but one problem.
  • Hi

We have found that there is a problem when using Windows 2000 and passing a url to the browser.

If you are using Windows 2000 please use the check for updates to see if there is a new version and then download the file from the web site rather than by via the update service.

We are trying to find a workaround and hope to have one soon.
