We are loooking to purchase SQL Backup however we have a couple of questions.

1) If I buy 1 copy of Backup Pro and lets say 5 copies of Backup Standard, can the 'Pro' copy manage the backups for the servers that only have Standard installed? Or do all of them need to be Pro?

2) We frequently replace end of life hardware and move databases. Can the existing SQL Backup license be moved from one server to another?

Re the first question, the GUI can connect to any SQL Server instance, with or without SQL Backup installed. You can view the backup history, alerts, job failures and active processes on these instances.

You cannot run a backup or restore using the GUI wizards on remote servers that only have the Standard or Lite licenses. You can still perform the processes manually e.g. using Query Analyzer or SQL Server Management Studio.

To use the GUI wizards on a Standard or Lite licensed server, you need to run the GUI locally. The exception here is if you are running a clustered instance, in which case you need a Pro license in order to use the GUI wizards, even though the instance is 'local' to the box.
