Migrating backend database

I'm having some problems moving our monitor repository database from a SQL 2012 instance to SQL 2014. The documentation seems to imply that a re-install is needed, and I've done that, and the process created and populated a new SQL 2014 database (which is fine - I can live with losing the existing data). However as far as I can see the monitoring processes are still connecting to the existing SQL 2012 database.
Am I missing something obvious?

When you reinstalled did you uninstall the old version?
Is the new install monitoring too?
