Re: Automatic Updates Issue
Re: Extended Events and Views
I'm not sure how you'd do prepared statements though, if you have those. That would take some experimentation.
But yeah, as you can see from all this, trying to monitor access to a table is very difficult. Why do you need to do that? Is there another way to satisfy the business need?
!!! Warning !!! DO THIS BEFORE YOU UPGRADE TO 14.0.3
Fortunately, I was able to find the issue in the log found in the path C:\ProgramData\Red Gate\Logs\Redgate Monitor\
Here is the significant portion of the issue in the log.
The reason for this failure is because Redgate renamed the SQL Monitor folder as documented in the release notes.
https://documentation.red-gate.com/monitor14/redgate-monitor-14-0-release-notes-240977444.html
Changes
- Rename the redundant folder of "SQL Monitor" from the ProgramData folder left after upgrade from v. 13 to avoid future confusion.
The fix: Edit and update C:\ProgramData\Red Gate\Redgate Monitor\Webserver.Kestrel.config, Replace references of SQL Monitor with Redgate Monitor to reflect the correct path.
Do this before you upgrade.
Hopefully this post will help others avoid the surprise failure I had to troubleshoot.
Re: Is it possible to pre-filter in SQL Compare?
Re: Connect to a server from (pseudo?) tsql
The main reason for asking this feature is to quickly switch between servers from the keyboard
For example, embedding prompt commands in comment like the following
--Connect ServerX
Once "executed" (in quotes as it is a comment but prompt understands) it will switch to that server
That's it.
Building further on this the feature can be expand to support intellisense after a "prompt command".
So that it statically knows by parsing the text that the commands after the prompt command are for another server.
This expansion is a nice to have. I was mainly looking for a way to switch between servers as no other extension that I know offers it and I still have to go through the "change connection" button/menu in ssms.
Makes sense? I will formulate it as a uservoice item as well but would like to use this forum to align our understanding of what the feature is and why it can be useful.

SQL Multi Script Feature Request
Our team manages a large number of databases (80+ per environment). Since we use a naming convention for the databases, it would be very helpful to be able to filter the list of databases when setting up a Database Distribution List. Just being able to filter the list based on a string "contains" filter would be great. What would be even more helpful is a dynamic Database Distribution List that does a match on a like expression or similar when selecting the Distribution List.

Re: Release Notes site not updated for 10.14.17
As this release came just a day after the previous one there were minimal changes. However, the lack of information was a mistake - thank you for highlighting it.
The only chnages were:

Performance improvements for SQL Prompt+
Re: How to best use Git For SQL Scripts?
Thank you for reaching out on the Redgate forums.
It may not be possible to achieve this using SQL Source Control. As you mention, it is used to version control your schemas and not scripts.
I would suggest Flyway as your potential solution to this scenario to handle database scripts migrations between developers using Git as your chosen Version Control System.
I have some potentially helpful links outlining how Flyway can connect with your version control repo of choice and help with the push/pull of scripts between developers
https://documentation.red-gate.com/fd/version-control-138347113.html
If wanting to trial Flyway, it can be accessed through the following link:
https://www.red-gate.com/products/flyway/
Our free Community offering of Flyway may be suitable for your requirements and give you the ability to set up a project, test the process to connect your database scripts with Flyway & handle database changes with your team easier.
Hope this is of help for your requirements.
Re: SSMS automatically restarts after I close it
Today I upgraded from SSMS 19.3 to SSMS 20.1 (Windows 11 box). Although SSMS is supposed to import options and customisations, it definitely doesn't do them all - including toolbars. I like my toolbars to have my most used tools and not filled with stuff I don't want.
So I modified the toolbars to the way I wanted, then exited out of SSMS. Unfortunately, SSMS automatically restarted (again) and the toolbars had all reverted (or, more specifically, nothing had been saved).
After various fumbling about, I found a workaround how to stop this happening:
- Disconnect from all servers before exiting SSMS.
The object explorer should be empty. This will stop SSMS restarting, and also allow you to save changes to toolbars (and perhaps other things).
(Note that it seems to be OK if you didn't actually open any databases, but if you have opened a database, then disconnecting from the server, before exiting SSMS, allows you to exit without restarting).
